Break the Ice
Investment project code: 29
Project Summary
I think the area would benefit from having local grit bins scattered over the area for when the pavements and pathways of elderly and vulnerable tenants are frozen over and they are unable to get out to the shops safely. The grittier only covers the main roads and not the side roads. I live in Lochfield and the majority of tenants in our area are elderly. In recent winters when it’s became icy the side streets and pavements have been like an ice rink making it impossible for people to get outProject Description
If there were grit bins scattered within the area then people would have access to salt readily for when temperatures drop. In this area we also have a nursery and 2 primary schools and a lot of people walk to school and to the nursery therefore having this facility it would make the local pavements and pathways safer for everyone.
The Housing Department will have a profile of tenants and their ages and will be able to identify the areas where the most elderly/vulnerable people live.
I'm sure able bodied constituents and neighbours would use the salt available in grit bins to grit the paths and pavements of their vulnerable neighbours.
The council could also have a pull of seasonable staff who could assist with this or it could be tied into the Community Payback team and they could do this as part of their community payback.
The seasonal staff or Comunity payback team would also be responsible for keeping the bins stocked up with salt so it is readily available when temperatures drop.
