Gardens maintenance and improvements - Spateston Road
Investment project code: 177
Project Summary
Upgrade or communal garden space to remove stones and replace with grass / slabsProject Description
Considered for an initial improvement of these communal garden areas in Spateston, mainly Spateston Road either by replacing the existing stone with grass or, preferably, low-maintenance paving/slabs.
While this would involve an initial investment, it could provide long-term value for money by significantly reducing ongoing maintenance requirements and associated costs. The current stone areas require regular weed treatment and removal, whereas a properly installed paved area would require considerably less ongoing maintenance. Grass would also improve the appearance and usability of the gardens, although it would require regular grass-cutting services.
Why this investment would be beneficial
- Reduce ongoing maintenance costs – replacing the current stone areas would reduce the need for repeated weed removal and treatment.
- Better long-term value for money – an initial investment could reduce recurring maintenance expenditure over future years.
- Improve the appearance of the area – creating cleaner, more attractive and usable outdoor spaces.
- Improve residents' quality of life – residents would be able to use and enjoy their gardens rather than being prevented from doing so because of overgrowth.
- Provide practical outdoor space – residents would once again be able to use their gardens for activities such as hanging washing outside, which has not been practical during summer 2026 due to the current condition of the gardens.
- Make better use of existing housing facilities – residents already have access to outdoor garden space, but currently cannot fully benefit from it.
- Create a more sustainable maintenance solution – a low-maintenance redesign would address the underlying issue rather than continuing to spend money treating the same problem.
This is therefore not simply a request for garden maintenance. It is a proposal for a one-off improvement that could provide a more cost-effective, sustainable and usable solution in the long term, while improving the environment and quality of life for residents.
